gradeassist.ai
VibeGrade Chrome extension open in Google Docs showing rubric-aware Smart Annotations on a student essay, with a grade breakdown panel on the right.
Smart Annotations pinpoint successes and gaps; Grade Breakdown estimates the final score against your rubric.

TL;DR

VibeGrade (still on the gradeassist.ai domain) is the most LMS-native of the AI essay-grader pack — it grades from inside Google Docs, Canvas SpeedGrader and Google Classroom without a separate upload step, then ships AI-writing detection (Pangram), plagiarism check and Playback Writing in the same extension. The free AI-detection and plagiarism tools alone make it worth installing.

Recommend it if

You grade essays inside Google Docs or Canvas SpeedGrader, you want rubric-aligned comments plus an academic-integrity check in one tool, or you need a free AI-detection tool you can hand to colleagues without a signup.

Skip it if

Your school is on Schoology, Blackboard or another non-Google / non-Canvas LMS, you only need lightweight feedback (Tallyrus / EssayGrader cost less), or you can't install Chrome extensions on managed devices.

VibeGrade (the product, on the gradeassist.ai domain — yes, the naming is confusing) is the most LMS-native of the new AI essay-grader pack. It runs as a Chrome extension that fires up inside Google Docs, Canvas SpeedGrader, Toddle and Google Classroom — no exporting essays to a separate app. The two surfaces that make it stand out:

  • Playback Writing — scrub through how the student actually typed the essay; pasted blocks show up as a discontinuity
  • Pangram-powered AI detection — sentence-level, vendor-claimed unbiased against nonnative-English writers

Both of those, plus a Plagiarism Checker, are free without signup at gradeassist.ai/detect and gradeassist.ai/plagiarism-checker.

When it earns its slot in your stack

  • You grade in Google Docs or Canvas SpeedGrader and currently switch tabs to a separate grader
  • You want AI-writing detection + plagiarism + Playback Writing in one tool instead of subscribing to three
  • Your district hasn’t approved a paid grading tool yet — the free AI-detection / plagiarism page is a useful wedge to demo the extension

What we like

  • + Lives inside Google Docs, Canvas, Toddle and Google Classroom — no upload/download flow
  • + Built-in AI-writing detection powered by Pangram (vendor-claimed "state-of-the-art, unbiased against nonnative speakers")
  • + Playback Writing replays the student's writing process so you can spot AI-pasting and revision struggles
  • + Grade estimate accuracy claimed within ±3% of teacher's final grade
  • + Free AI-detection and plagiarism-checker tools available without signup
  • + Compliant with COPPA, FERPA, SOPPA and state privacy laws per vendor

Heads up

  • Subscription pricing not shown on the homepage — must click through to a pricing page or contact sales
  • Branded as "GradeAssist" on the domain but "VibeGrade" everywhere else — confusing during procurement
  • Chrome/Edge extension only; no native Schoology / Blackboard integration
  • AI detection is always probabilistic — vendor itself warns teachers stay "in the driver's seat"

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it called GradeAssist or VibeGrade?

Both, and that's confusing. The domain is gradeassist.ai but the product is branded VibeGrade everywhere on the site, including the Chrome extension. Treat them as the same product.

How accurate is the AI detection?

VibeGrade uses Pangram for sentence-level AI detection. Pangram's marketing claims state-of-the-art accuracy and explicitly notes it's "unbiased against nonnative speakers" — a known failure mode of older detectors. Treat any AI detector as a signal, not a verdict; pair it with Playback Writing for stronger evidence.

How does it compare to CoGrader / EssayGrader / GradeWithAI?

VibeGrade's distinguishing surface is the in-LMS extension — it grades directly inside Google Docs and Canvas SpeedGrader, where CoGrader and EssayGrader pull essays out into their own app. VibeGrade also bundles AI-writing detection and Playback Writing for free; the others charge for or omit those. The trade-off is that the extension model means Chrome / Edge only.

Will VibeGrade replace teachers?

No — and the vendor explicitly says so in their own FAQ. The pitch is that VibeGrade speeds up grading while keeping the teacher in the driver's seat on rubric interpretation and final scoring.

How do schools buy it?

There is a school/district pricing page reachable from the homepage, but VibeGrade doesn't publish per-teacher pricing. Volume pricing, implementation support and custom packages are quote-based.
